Schuler Shook’s lighting team reviewed existing conditions and met with members of the church to understand their concerns. Carefully selected areas of increased illumination or “accent” could help draw the eye to aspects of the church that had long been too dark for viewing. Overall increased light levels with appropriate dimming controls were also discussed and approved.
St. Mary Church, Hyde Park
Cincinnati, OH
In preparation for St. Mary’s 100-year anniversary celebration, the parish worked to improve their church building in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Cincinnati. Improvements and updates to the lighting were identified as a key opportunity to enhance architectural and worship elements in the main worship space.
Based on input from the church, overall illumination levels at the pew level were increased to aid in reading.
Layers of light were applied to the Stations of the Cross, the ceiling trusses and arches, significant paintings, and various wood carvings. Thoughtful application of light sources allows the beauty of these elements to be appreciated by all.
A new preset dimming control system was programmed with multiple scenes that can be called up as needed for the different events and celebrations that take place at St. Mary Church.
Working closely with the church and Miller-Valentine Construction helped bring about a successful lighting update in time for the centennial celebration.
