Highland Park Presbyterian Church

Dallas, TX

Highland Park Presbyterian Church, an enduring landmark in University Park, Dallas, TX showcases stunning Gothic Revival architecture first brought to life by esteemed architect Mark Lemmon in the 1920s. With a rich history spanning nearly a century and four major expansions, the church embarked on a fresh vision to enhance its campus, aiming to accommodate a growing congregation and foster spaces for community engagement and childhood education.

Schuler Shook’s lighting design included expansion and renovation of the church that included the new Hunt Building, where we carefully illuminated the structure with special attention to the choir rehearsal room, creating a warm and inviting glow in the evening. Our exterior lighting approach was thoughtfully crafted to honor and enhance the campus’s original architectural character.

A key feature of this project is the Wight Garden. Once an open-air courtyard, it had been enclosed with a skylight in a previous renovation. For this project, OMNIPLAN introduced floating glass panels and dynamic sculptural elements beneath the skylight. Schuler Shook’s role was to ensure that the lighting harmonized with the space during daylight hours, which we achieved by incorporating subtle pairs of white pendant downlights and thoughtfully integrated general lighting. This approach allows the fixtures to disappear,” maintaining the desired ambiance without overwhelming the space.

Our lighting design extends throughout the renovated school areas, bringing a contemporary yet cohesive feel that complements the historic architecture, seamlessly blending the old with the new.
