Theatre planning focused on creating a flexible, technically capable venue suited to Northlight’s professional productions and range of programming. The performance space incorporates manual counterweight rigging with strategically located provisions for future motorized linesets and a hybrid stage lighting system that accommodates both LED and incandescent fixtures, allowing Northlight to bring viable equipment from its previous venue while establishing a modern infrastructure for future productions. The design also provides comprehensive backstage stage-management systems, including intercom, paging, video monitoring, cue lights, and lighting controls.
Northlight Theatre
Evanston, IL
Schuler Shook provided theatre planning and architectural lighting design for Northlight Theatre’s new permanent home in downtown Evanston, returning the company to the community where it was founded more than 50 years ago.
The project creates a dedicated 280-seat thrust theatre alongside a rehearsal hall, backstage support spaces, lobby, café, and gathering areas, while preserving and adapting the historic Barn Steakhouse building.

Architectural lighting reinforces the building’s contemporary character while creating a welcoming sense of arrival from the surrounding streetscape. Exterior color-changing LEDs highlight the building’s entrances, while inside, layered lighting strategies define circulation, seating, gathering, and performance-related spaces. Integrated lighting enhances stairs and decorative fixtures provide a human-scaled character throughout the lobby, bar, and lounge.
In the rehearsal hall, integrated linear lighting within acoustic elements provides flexible ambient and task illumination, while coordinated lighting extends into the second-floor lobby to create a cohesive presence visible from the street.
Across the project, the design balances functional requirements with an understated, contemporary aesthetic, supporting Northlight’s goal of creating an inviting new home for artists, audiences, and the Evanston community.
