The project restored native vegetation, developed an overlook at the rivers’ edge, created an inviting beacon that can be seen from afar, and integrated a mural by local artists into the railing panels.
26th Avenue North Overlook
Minneapolis, MN
Several neighborhoods lost their access to the Mississippi River in the 1950’s and 1960’s due to a new freeway and heavy industrial zoning. This is the first of many projects planned to reconnect that access by transforming 11 miles of waterfront with parks and trails.
A sense of welcome, comfort and safety was created with lighting. Warm white light from the railing and under benches illuminate the indigenous and modern symbols of the mural. Color changing lighting allows the top beacon and 35 foot angled column to glow while illuminating the base netting that energizes an interactive play area. The changing colors are programmed for each season and special occasions.
Located on a migratory bird path, care was taken to comply with both Dark Sky lighting limitations and Audubon Society lighting restrictions.
