University of Melbourne, New Student Precinct

Schuler Shook provided specialist lighting design, theatre planning, and audio video design services for the Arts and Culture Building, as part of the New Student Precinct at the University of Melbourne. 

The new building includes two multifunction theatre spaces, expansive foyers, a bar, gallery space, and multiple flexible student experience” spaces.

Close collaboration with the architecture team allowed for successful integration of the lighting to help realize the overall design vision.

The digital lighting control system allows full flexibility in creating different lighting looks throughout the day. The system also achieves significant energy savings through use of daylight sensors which dim down or switch off light fixtures close to glazing when sufficient daylight is detected.

Colour-changing façade lighting enhances the appear­ance of the building at night with programmable scenes, while avoiding any contribution to light pollution thanks to carefully selected precision optics.

Theatre planning designs include the Union Theatre, a very intimate 400-seat auditorium, that includes an orchestra pit, full fly tower and a state-of-the-art AV systems. 

Schuler Shook also provided theatre planning services for the Guild, a 100-seat black box performance space, with over-stage catwalks, retractable seating, and integrated audio video systems.
