TimeLine Theatre

Chicago, IL

Schuler Shook worked with TimeLine Theatre Company to plan and realize a permanent home for the Chicago theatre company, whose mission centers on presenting stories through the lens of historical context.

Beginning in 2010 with programming and visioning exercises, Schuler Shook helped TimeLine define its operational and artistic goals and evaluate potential sites throughout Chicago before the company selected a former warehouse in Uptown’s historic entertainment corridor.

The 21,000-square-foot building has been transformed into a multi-use cultural destination that supports TimeLine’s productions, education programs, administration, and community engagement. The new facility includes a 250-seat flexible black box theatre, rehearsal and production spaces, administrative offices, an education suite, and a street-level bar and gallery.

Working alongside HGA and Threshold Acoustics, Schuler Shook provided theatre planning and architectural lighting design for the renovation and additions. The design addresses significant structural challenges and shallow floor-to-floor elevations while creating a highly flexible performance environment that can adapt to a range of productions and support the company’s artistic ambitions.

The architectural lighting design uses a layered, theatrical approach to support both the building’s public spaces and behind-the-scenes work environments. Corridors and History Galleries” use focused and continuous illumination to highlight graphics, artwork, and exhibition materials while creating intuitive wayfinding. In lounge spaces, warmer, more intimate lighting establishes comfortable areas for gathering and provides transitions between brighter daylit spaces and darker theatre environments. Decorative and theatrical-inspired fixtures add moments of character and artistic expression, while practical workspaces such as the costume studio prioritize bright, even illumination, high color rendering, and flexibility for detailed work.

The project represents the culmination of years of planning and provides TimeLine with a permanent home designed to expand its impact while contributing to the continued revitalization of Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood.
