In 1990, Schuler Shook designed a supplementary system to increase light levels and improve the quality of light inside the Capitol’s corridors. A halogen uplighting system, state-of-the-art in 1990, revealed the vivid colors of the ceiling, and provided a pleasing lighted environment.
In 2011, Schuler Shook was asked to propose energy-saving strategies to replace the aging system. The state-of-the art solution included an extruded aluminum housing with an LED light source hidden within an added molding that blends into the detail at the top of the stone walls. A mock-up of the new system showed improved illumination, enhanced the pleasing environment, and reduced energy consumption by 60%
