Her Majesty’s Theatre Adelaide

Adelaide, SA

First opened in 1913, Her Majesty’s Theatre (HMT) Adelaide is Adelaide’s oldest continually operating performance venue. Adelaide Festival Centre Trust operate the venue. Schuler Shook worked closely with Cox Architecture and the design team to completely rethink the theatre. HMT Adelaide is now sized in terms of both seating capacity and stage space to easily support Broadway- or West End-style shows, as well as other Adelaide Festival Centre productions.

Schuler Shook’s work included increasing seating by 600 with the addition of a new balcony. The foyers were expanded, and the stage was completely rebuilt with a higher flytower and more efficient loading area.

Stage rigging, orchestra lifts, audio-visual, and stage lighting systems were all completely redesigned.

The back of house areas were renovated to support larger casts with modern, accessible dressing rooms, green rooms, and circulation areas.

The venue is now a contemporary facility for the arts while maintaining its status as the last surviving Tivoli theatre frontage in Australia.
