This is an Intermediate AIA CES course on landscape lighting. Participants have a general knowledge of the topic.
Landscape lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing our outdoor landscaped environments, accentuating the outdoor built environment, and providing safety and security during nighttime hours. The intent of this course is to address the design issues related to landscape lighting regarding aesthetics, code related requirements, safety issues and environmental impact. In this session we will explore important aspects of landscape lighting and learn how to select appropriate lighting techniques and parameters that enhance our outdoor environments. It also outlines the environmental considerations of lighting in urban vs. less populated environments, sky glow, and light trespass.

Learning Objectives
- Architectural and landscape integration of light sources: How the application of different lighting sources and techniques can be used to reinforce the nature of the outdoor environments we design.
- Code and safety related issues for the night-time environment: Discuss typical code related requirements for outdoor areas. Discuss typical safety issues in the outdoor environment and techniques for providing safety while still enhancing the landscaping and architecture.
- Lighting Zones: Discuss how the landscape lighting approach is affected by the greater environment in which the project is located. Discuss IES zone designations, techniques for lighting in urban environments and in less populated areas.
- Sky glow and light trespass: Discuss techniques to minimize sky glow and light trespass. Discuss the model lighting ordinance and similar local ordinances.
- Controls: Assess the importance of matching compatibilities between controls and sources, low end dim levels, protocols, use of color, use of time clocks and photocells, and scheduling.
