The Salt Shed

Chicago, IL

A nearly century-old Chicago icon, The Morton Salt Warehouse complex sat abandoned for years before it was converted into The Salt Shed, a 30,000 SF modern concert venue. Schuler Shook provided architectural lighting design and theatre planning consultation for the complex’s 3,600 capacity indoor concert venue.

The signature of The Salt Shed is its architecture, and the lighting design celebrates the landmark’s story, with upward illumination showcasing the support beams, trusses, and other industrial remnants throughout the space. Through thoughtful placement of fixtures, the lighting both emphasizes the open quality of the space and creates an intimate atmosphere for concertgoers.

A great concert venue is more than just a building – it’s an experience. Inspired architectural lighting and attentive planning were important to The Salt Shed’s successful re-imagining of a significant part of Chicago’s built history.

The Salt Shed is such a great idea! 16 On Center has transformed a disused warehouse into a big attraction for music fans. We lit the interior to celebrate the Salt Shed’s original architecture, and we worked with HBRA Architects to plan the seating and sightlines, ensuring great connection to the acts onstage. It’s an exciting, award-winning venue, and the acts usually sell out early!”
