Kim's

Minneapolis, MN

Formerly named Sooki and Mimi, the restaurant venture was created from James Beard award winning Ann Kim. The restaurant renovates an existing space to provide a warm welcoming atmosphere. Schuler Shook provided architectural lighting services for the interior and exterior areas.

The main architectural feature includes five large overhead trellises that are warmly illuminated. The linear lighting is integrated into the trellis structures to softly up light both the wood structure and the white ceiling above. This warm light reflects off the wood to provide a unique warm glow and serves as the general lighting for the space. The wood, which is light toned and natural, glows beautifully. Lighting above the trellis subtly up lights the white ceiling above creating separation between the trellis and the ceiling.

Accent lights are mounted between the trellises to highlight tables and work areas. Custom decorative fixtures are located throughout the space adjacent to dining areas to provide task lighting and a counterpoint to the soft glow from above.

Wall sconces and lighting integrated in to the shelves at the kitchen provide visual accents at eye level. At the seating adjacent to the window lighting is recessed into the walls to up light the white arches above. Near the bar warm light grazes down the existing brick chimney while table top lamps light the bar surface and linear lighting softly lights the vertical surface under the bar.
