Schuler Shook Chicago Office

Chicago, IL

The design of Schuler Shook’s Chicago office carefully blends passion for light, theatre, and AV into a dynamic living lab” for designers and visitors alike.

Details throughout celebrate the power of light and incorporate nods to the firm’s heritage.

The entry area features a custom suspended rope screen’ sculpture. Evocative of the firm’s theatrical heritage, its materials and composition recall rigging and batten systems in theatres. The ropes visually screen the conference room beyond, similar to a theatrical scrim.

The central circulation spine is playfully accentuated by theatrical projectors, with patterns changed seasonally. Discreet trackheads highlight plantings integrated within the credenza top.

Designers carefully coordinated duct and conduit routing, all painted white, to maximize the ceiling height in workstation areas and to provide unobstructed areas of exposed ceiling to reflect diffuse uplight.

Workstation area uplights and downlights incorporate tunable white LEDs that are programmed to automatically change in intensity and color temperature over the course of the day. Lighting scenes range from bright, cool, diffuse uplight in the morning to warm, dim, tasklight in the evening to reinforce circadian cycles and support wellness.

An existing industrial fire door features new stenciling that references Schuler Shook’s original, 1980’s office in the Civic Opera building. Grazing fixtures concealed behind duct work accentuate the texture of exposed brick.

In the main conference room, linear RGBW fixtures outline the felt cloud and direct focus to the monitor. Lighting can be programmed to various intensities and colors to support a variety of events.

An airy, geometric pendant floats above the table and delivers soft, focused task light during dimmed presentation scenes and videoconference meetings.

The material palette of the loft building is celebrated with revealing light.

Walls throughout are illuminated to celebrate the loft building’s materials, highlight art, and provide balance to the abundant windows.

Each of the breakout, meeting, huddle, and private spaces have their own design aesthetic, including showcased lighting fixtures.

A glowing letter-form sconce and dark paint strike a moody contrast in the phone room but deliver soft, face illumination for video calls.

It was during the COVID-19 lockdown that Schuler Shook relocated and performed the fit-out of the space, making the return to office all the more significant. Today, this dynamic, inspiring space supports Schuler Shook’s collaborative culture — helping inform the work of our designers, and telling the story of Schuler Shook.
