Well-integrated light sources within and around the new stair complement the concrete and steel finishes. Linear recessed fixtures in custom configurations support the form and clean line of the stair. Integrated handrail lights provide non-distracting light on the stairs while large openings in the walls give previews of the art to come.
School of the Art Institute - 25 & 33 East Washington
Chicago, IL
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) relocated studios and galleries to the site of the former Marshall Field & Co. Men’s Store annex in the Loop. The location on a busy street improves the school’s connection with the public. Studios and exhibit spaces for contemporary art cover 65,000 SF on three lower level floors connected to street level by a monumental stair.
When art projections are on, discreet downlights provide functional light for the floor four levels below. In times between digital content, linear luminaires with broad distribution add brightness to vertical surfaces.
