The light-filled building also comprises a choral rehearsal room that can serve as a small recital hall, faculty studios, practice rooms, and large rehearsal spaces for ensembles.
Northwestern University, Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Center for the Musical Arts
Evanston, IL
The Ryan Center houses Northwestern’s renowned Bienen School of Music and sits on a prime site on the edge of Lake Michigan. Connecting with the existing studio facilities in Regenstein Hall, the Ryan Center allows the School of Music to consolidate all programs for the first time. It is also the most recent component of the Arts Green, which also includes the Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts, the Marshall Dance Center, and the Block Museum.
The 152,000 SF center included a new 400-seat recital hall with stunning views of the Chicago skyline and a new “black box” facility for opera rehearsal and production, including retractable seating to facilitate rapid turn-around.
Schuler Shook provided theatre planning services and architectural lighting design for the entire project, including the new Arts Green exterior landscaped areas.
The Ryan Center achieved LEED Gold certification for energy efficient design.
