Emily Barnett

Lighting Design Intern

As a lighting design intern at Schuler Shook, Emily has learned the basics and practical applications of lighting design in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. She believes lighting design is a vital factor that affects human health and performance.

Emily is completing her final year in a dual degree program at the Illinois Institute of Technology – finishing up a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering and Master of Engineering in Architectural Engineering with a specialization in building systems.

“For me, lighting design is the perfect balance I have been seeking in architectural engineering between science, engineering, and architecture. Thanks to my internship, I have learned how lighting design develops through schematic design all the way up to construction administration. My experience at Schuler Shook even helped me win a scholarship from the IES Chicago chapter. Through this internship, I have delved further into the significance of light and how it plays a key role in our daily lives.”

While studying and working, Emily also has been heavily involved in and/or held leadership roles in the American Society of Civil Engineers, Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, and X-Chromotones a cappella group.

Emily is working on several projects at Schuler Shook and says her favorites include Chicago Riverwalk Civic Ramp, McDonald’s Flagship Chicago, Ravinia Festival, and being a part of Schuler Shook’s IIDA Stitch! Competition team.
